Le Ballet d'action
THE RENNAISSANCE OF ROMANTIC BALLET

CONCEIVED FOR A CONTEMPORARY PUBLIC

The Romantic Ballet revives man's eternal dream in search of an ideal world. At the end of the 20th century, the romantic ballet-fantastique is a renewal of romanticism in the broadest sense of the term. As with the science‑fiction cinema, it is man's everlasting search for a world where good triumphs over evil. It conveys us beyond the ordinary, and penetrates the shadows of our lives with a production where the story is brought to life through a close association of descriptive and colorful music, play of light and poetry of dance.

In 1760 Jean‑George NOVERRE, the father of Ballet d'Action wrote the "Lettres sur la Danse" establishing the rules for this genre of production which were used by the choreographers of the 19th century. Other than NOVERRE, the most outstanding were: GARDEL, CORALLI, MAZILIER, SAINT-LEON, BOURNONVILLE, PETIPA and Jules PERROT whose dynamic creativity has been long under estimated. While "romantic" opera, better known under the terms of "bel canto" and later "verissimo" had its origins in Italy, the romantic ballet d'action radiated from France; notably from the Paris Opera.

Unfortunately, true comprehension of Romantic Ballet has suffered more from the passage of time than opera of the same period. LA FILE MAL GARDEE and GISELLE remains the only ballet performed from the French repertoire of this brilliant era. Nevertheless, the archives contain over 200 romantic ballets d'action with scenarios, lithographs of costume and set designs and the musical scores. Unfortunately, the choreography was not written down and it is therefore impossible to reproduce the repertoire in its original version.

However, this disappearance can be a source of inspiration for today's choreographer. With a profound study of NOVERRE's writings and knowledge of the progress made in the technical domain of the dance, an entirely new choreography can be created inspired by the romantic spirit.

The total conception of a ballet production should use the multi‑market possibilities of our era to produce a high quality presentation at an affordable budget.

The initial costs: choreography, rehearsals, set designs, light effects, music and costumes, should take into account preparation for a multi‑media production. This should include: a theatrical production, tours, festivals, a television and/or cinema film, children's book, followed by DVD’s for a long term market.

The Romantic Fantasy Ballet d'Action is viable for the theater and the screen using a basic choreography adapted to each media. Based on a comprehensible scenario with a non-abstract choreography working in conjunction with the music, it produces a fusion of two arts. The result creates a sublime world filled with magical enchantment which triumphs over the heart and the spirit.

The appeal of a dream world fantasy production is a family entertainment which can seduce a large worldwide public from generation to generation.
